Chapter Five
Matthew looked up at the remaining seven or eight people waiting to see Santa. He focused on two blond heads at the end of the line. Chloe kept peeking around the other people, but she held tightly to Jillâs hand. He hadnât spoken to Jill for two days, not since he rushed out of her house after panicking when she mentioned Christmas. He could kick himself for that stupid act. She was only asking about Christmas. Any normal person would. Only he wasnât normal during the holidays. But he didnât have to be such an ass about the fact that he was a scrooge. None of this was her fault.
Finally, the green elf, Samantha, placed Chloe on Santaâs lap. He hoped that with his beard, fake eyebrows, and hat, she would not recognize him. Jill stood next to them. She hadnât spoken, but he could feel her watching him. He couldnât detect her mood. Damn. He shouldâve called her.
âHo ho ho. Whatâs your name little girl?â He deepened his voice so she wouldnât recognize it.
Wide eyes stared up at him. She was a little apprehensive at first, then she relaxed as a smile crept across her face. âChloe.â
âAnd have you been a good girl this year?â
âYes sir.â She looked up at her aunt. âThatâs my nanna. She said Iâve been a very good girl.â She proudly proclaimed.
Matt looked at Jill standing next to him. He smiled before turning back to Chloe. âAnd what would you like Santa to bring you for Christmas?â He leaned down so she could whisper her wishes in his ear.
âI want a big Barbie head so I can fix her hair. And I want a basketball so Mr. Matt can teach me to play.â
His throat clogged with emotion. âWell. Iâll have to see what I can do about that.â He whispered back into Chloeâs ear, âAnd what does Nanna want for Christmas?â He had no business asking the question, but couldnât stop himself.
The little girl glanced up at her nanna before answering him. Her voice was so low he had to lean closer to hear. âI think she wants Mr. Matt to come eat lunch with us. For Christmas. Thatâs what I heard her tell Mrs. Wanda.â
Matt laughed at the girlâs pure innocence. She was such a doll and she had found a way inside his heart. âHmmm. Seems like Mr. Matt is pretty special. Have a Merry Christmas, little Chloe.â
He set her off his lap, stood, and motioned to his elf to entertain her for a few minutes. Jill started to walk past him, but he put a hand on her shoulder, stopping her. âLet Tori take her. I need to apologize for the other day.â
Jill stared at him for a moment. Confusion and something a little more affectionate crossed her eyes. âApology accepted.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
Jill fidgeted with her purse strap, avoiding his eyes. âHe called me night before last.â
âHe?â Jill looked up at him. Uncertainty filled her eyes now. It hit him like a sledgehammer in the gut.
